Protecting cedar outdoors
Cedar is soft and rich in extractives. Left untreated, those extractives leach out unevenly and the surface becomes patchy. SiOO:X mineralises the fibre and keeps the grain visible.
THE ORIGINAL SILICATE WOOD PROTECTION SINCE 1994
Three challenges with cedar
Extractive leaching
Cedar's natural compounds are washed out by rain and cause run marks. A mineralised surface evens out the process.
Rapid UV change
The warm red-brown tone fades fast. With SiOO:X the transition to silver is controlled.
Soft fibre
Cedar is soft and does not tolerate repeated sanding. A system with no film to strip protects the timber.
Treating cedar
Cedar often absorbs slightly more than pine and spruce. Allow margin on volumes.
Coverage on cedar
Start from 8–10 m²/litre for Wood Protector and 10–12 m²/litre for Surface Protector, adding 10–15 % margin on rough-sawn cedar. The calculator accounts for area and number of coats.
